For me this meant that I didn't have to go into the office, but sadly didn't mean I got some extra days off. Internet access and a laptop means that in theory everything that can be done in the office can also be done at home.

This isn't always the case and there are definitely some things that are made more difficult working away from the office. First is the lack of people, normally I'd be sharing an office with another person and there is the rest of the team in adjacent offices ready to have a chat or discussion. Second is the type of work being done, if you're doing something that can just be done with minimal input from other people then being sat with few distractions can be very efficient but the opposite is true, if you require input from a number of people then distance will hamper your efforts. Finally is the timing, there's a natural rhythm to office life from when people arrive to when they leave an it's very easy to stick within this rhythm. Outside it you need to ensure that you're working at the right times and more importantly finishing at the right time so you don't overwork yourself.

Fortunately the weather has gone back to the British norm (cold and wet) so it's ok to go driving back into work. Hopefully we'll have learnt a bit from the enforced remote working so when it next happens we aren't impacted quite so badly. How the rest of the country copes, well we'll just have to wait and see.

Driving Karma

I like driving, always have done. Ever since I had my licence and got used to doing longer journeys I've often found I can relax by hitting the road with something good to listen to and possibly a particular direction in mind.

Part of my enjoyment of driving, particularly good country roads, is to drive them at the limit. Not speeding, not dangerously, but if there's a decent straight bit of tarmac, with the occasional interesting bend then I want to be at the limit and it can at times be a bit frustrating when stuck behind someone going significantly slower than that.

Strangely I don't enjoy my morning commute all that much. Yes it's country roads which are interesting to drive so I guess it might be a case of familiarity breeds contempt but I actually believe it's because I get stuck behind a slow driver more days than not.

Today however was very different, on the way in the roads were clear and I felt like I had the road to myself and mentioned this to my colleagues at work. I may even have suggested that my thoughts to all the other drivers in Hampshire to get out of my way had finally worked and that karma might come back to bite me.

Turns out I may well have been right. About an hour before I would normally consider leaving an email arrived which indicated my normal route home was closed. Fair enough, I'll take the motorway, it'll just mean working slightly later than normal to avoid the worst of the jams. Then it turned out that the motorway was jammed due to a broken down lorry. This meant that my smooth journey in was going to be complemented with a slow, queue laden journey home.

Fortunately it was as bad as it could have been, but certainly wasn't as interesting, and the motorway definitely crawled in places. Looking back on both journeys I don't think that they're going to necessarily change how I view driving on the road, especially my commute, but perhaps I'll be just a little less smug if it's a good run in.

A post about work

I don't often talk about my job in any great detail, mostly because I get the impression it wouldn't be that interesting for anyone that isn't in the trade, and because I can get away with saying I work in computing, or that I work for IBM.

There have been several changes in what I do in the 6 years I been working there full time but I've stuck with the same team because it's always provided a challenge, whether that's going to Poughkeepsie for a month to write a book, or being put in charge of a group of people and told to produce something by the deadline.

The latest 'opportunity' (which I'm sure is management speak for more work) to be sent my way is to act as a design architect for one of the systems we use. From a personal note, this is very cool, the sort of role I've wanted since I started, and without sounding too bigheaded I think it's a job I can do well.

However there is scope to get things horribly wrong. While I may be in charge of the direction things take, I can't micromanage every little detail of the work, nor can I reject something because it isn't exactly how I'd have done it myself.

After a week in the role I've a list of requirements and plenty of ideas, just need to sort out how and when they get done. It's a tough job playing while the venue is most likely still filling up and a lot of people will be at the bar.

Last night I went and saw Nine Inch Nails at the O2 in London and had a perfect example of what I'm talking about. The big names on the tour weren't due on till over an hour after the doors opened and so Mew were playing to a still forming crowd and a packed bar.

Turns out that they are a fantastic band with a different sound and incredible vocal harmonies. It's a shame that they didn't have the full crowd to play to and that we missed the beginning of the set however a quick download from iTunes later and I can get to know the music a bit better.

So next time you're at a gig, make sure to check out the support act(s) as you may well be surprised at what you hear.

Protecting our Internet Access

So the European parliament has got it into its head that it should be fine for Internet Service Providers (ISPs) to limit our access to websites on the internet based on whatever package we've purchased from them.

Think about how Sky and Virgin Media work today, there are different packages you can purchase which give you different channels you are allowed to view. Without the right package you can't watch Premiership matches or the latest movies.

While this is ok for television, the internet is a completely different beast though. New sites are being opened up all the time and once they're in a search engine like Google it should be possible for anyone to find them and use it. However if this goes through and their site isn't part of your ISPs package they're not going to get your custom.

Now I really like the way when I need something slighly different than what you get on the high street they are often a few sites which can provide this and get it mailed out the next day. I don't want my internet compartmentalized based on what I'm prepared to pay a company that supports the physical wire to my house.

If you agree that this plan just has bad written all over it then head on over to http://www.blackouteurope.eu and follow their advice for lobbying your MEPs to vote against the bill next month.

Random Things

I've been tagged enough times on Facebook with this latest fad so thought I'd do my response here and make it a bit more accessible. So without further ado, 25 random things about me.

I spent my first 15 years growing up on the Isle of Wight, this explains a lot about me.

I'd never been on a plane till I was 23.

Both times I have been to the United States it has been for business.

I get addicted to TV series very easily, so much so that I now avoid certain new programs to avoid adding to the list.

If I had the time and the talent I would have loved to be a full time musician.

I'd love to own a 2-seater coupe, but am worried I wouldn't fit in it, or it wouldn't be big enough to carry all the stuff I need.

I'm qualified to work as a door supervisor at a pub or club.

I have never been stopped by the police whilst driving.

Over the years I've played concerts at Canterbury Cathedral, Birmingham NIA and Royal Festival Hall.

I've worked for IBM for nearly 5 and a half years

A good night in will generally involve: pizza, beer or wine and a movie

I have never seen Titanic. I can't see the point when I know the end.

I never read the end of a book first.

I can't grow a proper beard anymore otherwise the gray hairs show.

When Go-Karting I have more fun going round corners sideways than driving the track "properly".

I get very annoyed by people who pull out in front of me and then proceed to drive slowly causing me to brake.

I'd like to cook more, but find it difficult when it's just for me and at the end of a long day.

Sometimes it scares me when I can work out how to fix a problem in code without actually looking at the code.

After one disastrous night drinking cider it would be 9 years before I drank it again.

Bad computing references in films may cause me to shout at the screen (but never in the cinema).

I would love to visit Canada at some point or drive down the east coast of America.

I don't make the most of living on the edge of the New Forest.

Very silly jokes will nearly always make me laugh, especially the one about the bee in the cake shop.

This blog post has taken me three days to write.

I've never enjoyed dance clubs and would much prefer a decent pint in a quiet pub.

So there we go, 25 random things about me.

New Blog

After the tech related post that I put up yesterday it was commented that some of the usual readers may not actually be as interested as me in that sort of thing.

This is very understandable so I've setup a new blog Ensure there are no spaces in the path to this directory.

Download and install the latest maintenance build for the Web Tools Project (WTP). This is required for support with JBoss5 otherwise you may hit errors later on.

Start the Eclipse workbench

Open the JEE perspective (if not already open)

In the servers tab, right click and select New->Server

Choose JBoss5 from the list

Click 'Next >' and on the next panel enter the location of the JBoss installation you unzipped in step 2. If you get an error saying that mail.jar can't be found then the latest version of WTP hasn't been installed correctly.

Click 'Finish' and the server will appear in the Servers tab.

From here you can start the server which will launch it and send the output to the console. If you get Exceptions being thrown then the first thing to check is whether the JBoss location contains spaces in the path.

If the start takes longer than the configured time allowed then double clicking on the server will open the configuration page which will allow you to increase the startup timeout to a value which allows the server to start within that time.

From here everything should be setup ready to develop applications and deploy them to the server.

Have fun.

Playing with Tech

One of the things I always liked about being at University was the opportunity to play with new technologies. Whether it was programming languages, operating systems or seeing what was coming up on the horizon.

Once I started working full time, there was still some of that with learning a new product and the technologies it employed. However as time has moved on there's been less of this kind of learning required and I've been working on other things that haven't required quite so much technical knowledge.

This year I'm hoping to get back to some more technical stuff. To that end I've picked up a new PC and am currently learning some C#, which may seem strange for a Linux/Mac/Java fan, but professional considerations need to be taken along with personal feelings about business practices.

We shall see what comes out of all this, I already have a design for one application I want to write so I may use this blog as a place to write up anything I find or to rant about things that don't go so well.

Alongside this I've started using a Twitter account I created ages ago and never got round to using. Well that happened last night :(

Having decided to not stay up watching TV and be good about getting some sleep the phone went off. Two hours later I got to bed, but it's tricky to sleep when there's a chance you'll have to get up again. At 6am I did need to get up again but fortunately not for as long.

Fortunately it doesn't look like this one is going to reoccur this weekend and I'm really hoping that nothing else comes up.

Everything just be cool OK!

Never too late to learn

One of the great parts of post Christmas TV are the Royal Institution Christmas lectures. Something I generally always want to watch and generally over the years have missed the majority of the week long series. This year they're all based on computing, and currently looking at how microprocessors work and are made.

Having worked in computing for the past 5 years and done a degree in Software engineering there is still a huge amount of detail related to the hardware that I would have to admit to being sketchy on. I know enough to be dangerous and am fairly happy to muck about with the innards of a modern PC, but it's still nice to sit here of an evening learning how they make things and where the current limitations lie.

Tomorrow's on Human Computer Interaction will be worth a watch as well...

First day in the office

There are certain things that happen whenever you start a new job, so having them happen when you've been working for a company for 5 years is a bit surreal. I'm currently the owner of a new ID badge for the site and have a new office (albeit temporary) for the work we're here for over the next few weeks.

Plans are being made and the work looks to be a lot of fun even though there appears to be a lot of it, and once I get over the jet lag things should be a lot smoother. Also driving is getting easier, at least now I go to the correct side of the car to get in and I don't feel quite so nervous about going around the place.

Englishman in New York (State)

At 5am on a dark autumnal morning the taxi arrived that would take me up to Heathrow ready for the trip out to New York. Having done all this before there weren't quite so many nerves with having to do the whole travelling thing and only having to do one flight made things a lot more straight forward.

The flight itself was fine, watched lots of films and ate what was claimed to be breakfast and lunch (actually the pizza wasn't too bad). Upon arrival made it through immigration with no problems, mentioning that you work for IBM still has a couple of advantages. Heading into the arrivals lounge Zippe and Debbie were there to say hello (and have a chat and a coffee) before they had to head out to someone sunnier and I had to pick up the hire car.

Having already driven in the states on a previous trip being on the wrong side of the car and not having to change gear didn't really phase me. Having been forced to hire the smallest class, I was expecting something I might struggle to fit in, however the Honda Accord feels bigger than my normal car. Being on the wrong side of the road wasn't a problem due to driving on major roads and them being in effect motorways (albeit with a slightly slower speed limit). Cruise control is my favourite toy when in the states, press a couple of buttons and all you've got to do is point the car in the right direction.

The drive itself was quite pretty, ignoring the rain and after a quick tour around the town having missed the turning for the hotel (there are houses with white picket fences) I got all checked into a quite frankly huge suite which will be home for the next four weeks (photos below). A very nice goody bag was presented on arrival and the bottle of wine will most likely come in very handy as the project goes on.

America for a month

After some last minute decisions work have allowed me to go out to Poughkeepsie, NY for 4 weeks to write a technical book based around the product I work on. This is very cool as it's something I've been wanting to do for a while plus has the advantage of allowing me to work in another country.

I fly out on Saturday morning, land at JFK airport, and once I've had some lunch/tea/whatever it is by that time it'll be time to drive up to the hotel that will be home for the four weeks I'm out there. The driving shouldn't be a problem given my holiday jaunts around Orlando last year (another work related trip) though the distance is a bit greater. I'm also hoping to see a bit more of New York city than just JFK airport.

Expect touristy type updates here, plus possibly one or two pictures.

Who are these people?

So after a silly prank phone call which caused 2 complaints after it was initially aired, a week later after the papers had got hold of it there are 30,000 complaints. The fallout is massive with resignations and suspensions and questions being asked in parliament. Ok, the phone calls weren't funny, and yes they probably shouldn't have been aired but this was a pre-recorded show and the producer decided it would be ok.

Fast forward to today, the new series of Top Gear starts with a feature on how hard it is to be a truck driver. Clarkson makes a couple of jokes based off some urban myths which weren't necessarily in the best of taste, but in the context of the program and the persona he projects not entirely unsurprising. As of this morning there were less than 200 complaints, by the end of the afternoon there were over 500 and people were calling for him to be sacked.

Now if you see something that is genuinely offensive you are well within your rights to complain, I don't want to take that away from people but I think you do need to have been there at the time of the incident to be truly offended. The fact that the number of complaints grows after the event seems to indicate that there are people who are just looking to complain because there's something to complain about, which of course begs the question why? Head outside and enjoy the wonderful countryside we have and think about all the huge things that are going on in the world that need to be fought against rather than some throw away joke from a motormouth television journalist.

It should also be mentioned that of the millions of people that watch Top Gear there have been only 500 complaints so in comparison there are a disproportionately larger group of people who watched the program and enjoyed it. Let's not forget these people (including me) who are likely to be lost in the moral outrage of the over vocal minority.

Things that you don't want to find out

The office lights go off at 7.28pm every night regardless of whether you're still in it or not.

Not been the best start to the week.

Are you kidding me Steve

I've got into using Macs over the last couple of years. I'm sat on my sofa using my Macbook whilst upstairs the Mac Mini is chugging away keeping track of my email and being available for when I need to sit at a desk.

I'm not a zealot on the things, but I have convinced at least one or two other people to use them mainly on the idea that they just work, which they do. Spending most of the day at work trying to get computers to do what we need them to do means I'm less keen to do the same at home when all I want to do is play a few games, read blogs and check out Facebook.

Recently I've noticed that the laptop isn't performing as well as the desktop, and figured it's down to having slightly less memory into the laptop. Ok, not a problem, perfectly possible to upgrade the parts so I toddle off to Apple store to see what the cost is.

Imagine my shock when I spot they're looking to charge £120 for the upgrade. Seemed a bit pricey so I checked out some other sites who offered the same kit for about a quarter of the price. Now I'm not sure how they can justify the mark up on it but needless to say I won't be buying it from them at that price.

It's the end of the world as we know it?

So it's been all over the news today, that CERN has fired up it's Large Hadron Collider and send a stream of particles all the way round. Working on the Support Team gives plenty of opportunities for doing many and varied things around the festival, from the fairly mundane of walking around a campsite or the village, to driving a golf buggy full of stewards or escorting people away from the beer tent.

This year did seem a lot quieter than previous years, but this wasn't necessarily a bad thing, wandering around there was plenty of time to chat with the greenbelters who were there for the festival (and get the occasional cup of tea, slice of cake) or the other stewarding teams who were looking after the venues or site.

There were some key highlights though, Squeak getting caught twice by Zippie and Merlin doing something unusual in the first hour of our last shift, encouraging Cola (one of the new members) to lick a sweet before giving it to Handbag (yes we all have weird names) and coming off the last shift and sitting around having a relaxed drink and chat.

Can't say I saw a huge amount of the festival but when you're sleeping till midday and then working till 3am there's only so much you can do whilst trying not to overdose on caffiene or sugar.

Regardless of what happened I'll be applying for next year, and wondering what random things we'll be getting involved with then.

Busy busy busy

Ye gods, where does the time go, it seems like days and weeks fly past at times and when there's enough jobs to take up twice as much time and trying to keep up with everything else that keep you from going insane.

Some highlights though have to be the musical excursions, the rehearsal weekend and orchestra recording for the new O&S Album that's being put together which were certainly a lot of hard work but should result in something good, a jazz band rehearsal which was certainly more snug since the front room got finished. Also getting together for an 'Old Bangers and Blowers' rehearsal which was certainly different playing in such a small ensemble, and also meant that I had to play clarinet again, and the first parts no less which was a challenge, esp with the high notes, but was quite cool to be able to play a lot of the parts.

Other than that work is being fairly interesting with the work that is coming up and what I'm being asked to do at the moment. There are some challenges and areas where I can learn some new stuff which is good, just hoping that things don't take a turn for the worse and I end up getting really frustrated with the job.

Up and down the M3

Weird title I know, but would certainly have to be the major hurdle for this week what with a management group meeting and FAST meeting in London this week. Being on a course helped in some ways, and there's still tomorrow to try and rest up before starting back in the office on Monday. The course was one that the team had been waiting a few years to do, and so hopefully will come in useful with some future development work and the possible threat of a customer call out.

In other news I now have a dishwasher (yes!! no more washing up) and a shiny new phone. There is a also a plan to door up the hatchway through to my kitchen which is the last thing really to do in the front room. Well 2006 has gone, and was quite a full year looking back on it. A few firsts, a few new things and lot of things that were enjoyable which has to be the main thing.

Christmas was spent round at mum and dads and mainly involved plenty of food, drink and plenty of relaxing. Presents were good and just what I asked for, including a very nice wall clock which has gone up in the lounge and the swinging pedulum is now very slightly hypnotic (must stop staring at clock). New Years eve was very kindly hosted by Uncle Rowland where a good time was had by all and managed to include 6 (count them 6) bottles of champagne over the course of the night. My head wasn't too bad this morning but a bowl of homemade soup (not mine) and some fresh baked bread helped. Ok that's a random thing to blog about but it was a damn fine meal considering how much sleep I hadn't had ;)

I'm back home now and with one day left of the holiday it's time to get prepping for everything that needs to be done in the next few days and weeks, but on the plus side my front room is almost complete (just need to get some doors for the hatchway), but the new carpet and sofas arrived last month and really do look good, and it's not just me that says that :)

The Christmas decorations will have to come down this week as well, which is a bit of a shame, but does mean I get the massive tree out of the window and should inspire me to bring all my CDs back down from where they've been stored in the spare room, and then I ought to really look into clearing that room out, too many books in too many boxes still I guess ;)

Have a great 2007, I know I intend to

Christmas is coming...

No I haven't got the date wrong, it is still November (just) but you definitely get the feeling that Christmas will soon be upon us. Obviously the decorations have been in shops since Halloween was done with and the ads are beginning to appear on television with greater frequency. Other signs are the appearance of Christmas lists round at Mum and Dads and of course the Christmas music is out with the bands. SCWB are doing a Christmas concert after the Turner Sims one last weekend (which went very well all things considered) and SUCB have got the now traditional festive encore. The major downside was that we had to play Sleigh Ride tonight, and though I was more comfortable getting the notes under my fingers, it's still never going to be my favorite piece to play.

In other news I managed to get a few games of badminton this week for the first time in around a year+. Still some of the old mistakes but some damn fine shots (even if I do say so myself). The muscles definitely let me know this morning that I'd done it, but a bit of exercise can't go amiss.

Finally we got v7 out the door and so there are drinks tomorrow \o/. It's always good when your manager sends out a meeting notice with a location of the local pub :)

and the decorating goes on...

Hopefully there will be a blog post soon which doesn't contain an update on decorating, but while it's going well and every little change brings a smile I don't think I'll be letting up. The border went up today again with help from Dad which has meant it's gone on right and again looks great. Fortunately we only had to do one joining up of the pattern on the massive wall and that will be cunningly hidden by a room divider.

New sofas were always on the cards, but I had planned to buy them a bit later (possibly after Christmas). However having seen one I liked in Homebase it suddenly turned out that the parents had got a voucher for 15% off which had to be used this weekend. So in about 4 weeks there should be some new sofas in my front room, which does give a bit of a deadline for sorting things out like carpets but that's ok as it'll help with my Christmas deadline(ish). Of course the credit card is not out of commission, what with the new fridge and putting my car through it's MOT.

My freevo box was brought back to life after shifting everything round in the front room. Some slight hacking was then involved to get it back to the original state and I still can't get the listing guide updating as automagically as it used to but it's usable for when I need it.

Finally I've managed to upload the pictures from the fireworks last night and the TP jolly to London which I completely forgot to mention last week. That saw us going round the London Eye (some great views) and then a meal on the Dixie queen while travelling up and down the river, the free bar didn't go amiss either.

Interesting/Different Weekends

The last two weekends have been different from what would have been considered the norm for the last month or so. Firstly we had the Colchester event with the O&S which was my last event as a player. After all the planning that had gone into the event and the concerns as to how well everything would work, I would have to say that the event was a success. The concert sounded fantastic and there was even an orchestral piece to keep us non-singers happy. Walking on stage while playing the solo in Bolero was probably one of the most challenging things I've ever done as a player, but nailing it in the concert (after a few false starts in rehearsal) certainly felt like an achievement. Now that I've officially left as a player there's plenty to be getting on with in terms of the management stuff but that can be discussed in a later post.

As you probably noticed last weekend was fireworks night, and in keeping with a tradition there was a firework party hosted by Zippie and Debbie for the support team from Greenbelt. Having gone through the previous weekend (see above) which was very hard work and then everything that's been going on in the office it was really good just to hang out and chill with some friends. Plus I got to do some different things like make wooden stakes and chop wood for the fire and most importantly light some fireworks :D It's really good to be able to hang out with groups of friends for no other reason than to hang out.

With all this *relaxing* done there's a few Christmas concerts coming up and now that my front room is really beginning to look good I ought to pull the stops out and get it all completed. Ah well, life goes on...

New House (stuff)

Not quite a new house, but does kinda have that feel to it. After some stirling work by Dad during the week, it was time to get some new colours on the wall, almost. There was still a little bit of prep work to do, which is why there is now an inch gap (or more) between the carpet and the wall, but as I was going to get a new carpet it's not a real problem.

But after putting some base coat on the skirting and the window sills, the two massive tins of paint got opened and on went the new colours. I was a bit nervous about the choice of colours, not entirely sure how well they'd work together, and in the room, but I think it's beginning to look really smart. The bottom colour is going to need a bit more touching up, and I still need to find a border to put round the middle. Once that's done there'll just be the small matter of getting a new carpet and furnishing the room. Making a separate dining area and living room should stop the room feeling so massive and it'll be nice to have some people over again possibly for Christmas drinks. (oooo mulled wine)

The new fridge/freezer got delivered easily enough, so that'll need to be stocked (though there is some beer in the at the moment, get the bases covered). So after a year and a bit, a bit more of the house is feeling like my own :)

House Changes

So having spent longer than expected getting to this stage I'm happy to announce all the wallpaper is down in my front room, the pelmets and bows with the *lovely* pink colouring are down (and may be ceremonially burnt). Holes have been filled, and rubbed down a couple of times, and white paint has gone up on the big wall and all the way around the coving.

My Dad is being brilliant, having patched a load of the plaster work and helped with the filler work, he's coming down tomorrow on one of this days off to do more work getting the walls preped and painted up. That just leaves sorting out the skirting boards, painting the walls the right colours and putting the border up. Then getting some furniture and sorting out how it looks. Suddenly that list seems a lot longer than the one of things that have been done but I'm feeling good about the room and what I want to do with it. Of course once it's done it'll be excuse to have friends round again for an evening/weekend.

On the slight downside from the weekend, the fridge/freezer that was left with the house is finally giving up the ghost. Well the freezer door no longer closes reliably (as I found this morning when it was open with defrosted food inside). So it's off for a quick trip to Currys tomorrow lunchtime to see if a replacement can be sourced, delivered and the old one removed. Not the best thing that could have happened, but with two lots of on call money coming through in the next pay packet that should have it covered.

I'm almost convinced everything is going to come good so what this space for piccies once everything is as I want it.

I'm not dead!!

Blimey it's been a while since I last posted so let's do a quick run down of what's been happening. We finally hit all the deadlines with work and so the pressure has kinda eased, though the occasional weekend day and extra hours are still present.

I managed to get away at the end of August for a bit, the O&S summer school was really good fun and a chance to get away from all the office stuff and concentrate on other things (mostly music). After that a load of us went on to Greenbelt for stewarding. This was only my second festival and my first on the support team. It was quite hard work, especially finishing after 3 most nights, but the work was interesting and varied, and made a huge difference from when I did venues a couple of years before. Plus I got a nickname, 'Guilty', which does have a backstory which people can ask me about if at all interested. Also it couldn't have been that bad as I'm all signed up for next year ;)

A while back I succumbed and bought a Nintendo DS, which is a very shiny piece of kit if you look at the main specs. There's a project out there to porting linux to run on it. Having got this working I thought I might carry on with my glut of C programming and port the latest Gaim release to it, as someone has made a very nice text front end onto it. This is all a bit geeky I know, and really it's a more see if you can rather than having really anything useful but I think it's quite cool.

Also I've started decorating other parts of my house, the office has had a couple of additions go on the wall, and I have all the parts necessary to put the book shelves up (though I might get some help in). The front room is the major project, firstly taking the wallpaper down and crying at some of the things I'm finding, and then sorting out the rest of that and painting and making it more my own. Hopefully the bulk will be done by Christmas, and Dad has said that he'll give a hand when I need it. *cough* painting *cough*

Finally, having joined the Southampton Concert Wind Band a few weeks ago, I finally plucked up the courage and went to my first concert. There were still a few pieces that I hadn't played fully but this didn't really matter (sight reading is a wonderful thing) and we survived nearly 3 hours of playing just out of the wind and rain in Port Solent.

Large Update 2

Not that this should become a normal occurrence but given the month lapse between posts let's catch up with what's been happening.

O&S made the trek up to Blackpool again to take part in the Breakout weekend that was being put on in the Winter Gardens. The fortnight before had been the rehearsal weekend which was a bit more southernly in Birmingham. Both weekends were a lot of hard work but really good fun, with some great music to play and a chance to catch up with friends again.

The drive back was hard but I did manage to get back to watch the second half, and then extra time, and then the penalties of the world cup final between France and Italy. Having Italy in the concert band sweepstake certainly made it more interesting to watch, especially once Italy had to take penalties with their record. However Italy managed to hold on and win not only the world cup but £48 for me.

On the subject of winning (please note the seamless links between these sections) Simon hosted a poker night last week for a group of us from work. Having only played poker on the computer meant I was unsure how well I'd hold up against real people, however I managed to come out the table winner (even if a lot of it came down to having a scoring hand on nearly every hand). Originally the winnings were going to be for drinks after Friday's Ultimate match but the heat and time put pay to that. Oh well it'll just have to wait for another time.

The Ultimate club is going well and I'm just surviving the current heat wave even if it just about kills me by the time I've run myself silly on both defense and offense. The exhibition match Friday lunch time went well (even if I had to wear dark at lunchtime in the sun) so hopefully we'll have a few new members coming down of a Wednesday.

We also ran the Sports Relief mile at work the previous week. I was fairly uncertain as to how well I'd manage it given how inactive I'd been in previous months but with a target of 10mins I headed off in the middle of the pack of 'runners'. In the end I (fairly) comfortably managed around 8mins which was fairly impressive. So my new exercise fad is to try and go running once or twice a week at work. The routes are fairly scenic and there's plenty of shade for when the temperature rockets as it has at the moment.

Finally (on the hottest day of the year so far) I headed into London in order to meet with a solicitor to help start the process of setting up the charitable company for the O&S. Certainly was an interesting meeting with a good outcome which should see things moving along.

Thorpe Park - WooHoo!!!

Yesterday the brave few from Concert Band that were still around and able travelled up to Thorpe Park for a day of fun and adrenaline. I think the best way to go through this is my opinions of my favourite rides.

Nemisis Inferno
Feels very weird when you don't have anything under your feet for this ride, especially when a corner throws you out to the side or you're doing a loop and you don't see anything but sky for what seems to be an eternity. Apart from keeping a firm eye on the seat in front of me I did enjoy the ride though it'd be worth going on it again to try and gain more of the experience.

Stealth
This is the parks new ride for the year, and looks very scary as you look at it from various points of the park. The track appears very simple, you go up and come down but the up is vertical and the down goes beyond vertical before catching you again. This was the first ride we had to properly queue for and this actually helped quell my anxiety, though having the ride breakdown while we were waiting wasn't the best announcement I heard all day.

The ride itself really is something else, being accellerated to 80mph in 2.5secs is just breathtakingly fast (literally) while the down part with the beyond vertical has you hanging against the harness while the cart twists down beneath you. This ride alone gave me the biggest adrenaline rush of the whole day, though I'm not entirely convinced I'd do it again.

Tidal Wave
Before you even join the queue for this ride it warns you that you'll get very wet, and they aren't exaggerating. In reality it's just a very big log flume ride, but the amount of splash that you generate just gets you from every angle. Of course we weren't expecting the group after us to get us as well as we were waiting to disembark but given the heat of the day it wasn't long before everything was dry again (well mostly) while we queued for the next rides.

Zodiac
This would probably be considered a tame ride in comparison to all the others, but given that you start in a ferris wheel on it's side which then spins you up enough that your pod is already horizontal and then lifts so you start doing loop the loops as if in a plane (or nemisis). I can't explain what is was about this ride, but it definitely brought a smile to my face or maybe that's just the adrenaline from the day.

Collousus
10 loops in total and two corkscrews, so at least we knew what to expect, or at least that's what I expected. What I didn't expect was that you could move in the seat, so that meant on some bumps you were jolted out of the seat (much like going over a hump back bridge) and on the corkscrews you were totally out of your seat resting on the harness. We managed to do this one twice, and even the second time it was exciting and worthwhile.

Overall I had a really enjoyable day and managed to keep the old fear of heights at bay to take on some of the more challenging rides :)

Summer Concerts and Sport

Last weekend was the BeachFest ultimate tournament down at Sandbanks, and while we weren't playing this year Liz, Si and I were there to support Andy and Sally playing for Gecko. A slightly late start meant we missed their first match but were there for all the rest. The weather was hot and sunny and the matches interesting and frantic at times. Always good to see how the game should be played, now if only I could get some of that in to the practices on a Wednesday ;)

The Concert Band summer concerts were this week, and with the Southampton one again being sited at Bargate these were a good chance to play some fun pieces in a more informal setting. The concert went pretty well ignoring the music flying all over the place, and me not being quite used to the new reeds I've decided to move onto. Today should have been the Bournemouth concert but for various reasons this was unable to happen, which is a bit of a shame, but we did instead play outside Winchester cathedral which was a very nice venue. The main cathedral to the side and the greenery in front for the audience to sit on. With a sparser band than previously the concert went very well and the solo in Bohemian Rhapsody is still fun to play (along with the rest of the piece).

Finally it would seem wrong to post at this time without mentioning the world cup (currently Portugal are 1-0 up against Angola). The first England match was certainly interesting, so we shall see how well we progress through the competition. Plus there are a couple of sweepstakes on the side which always helps make things a bit more interesting :D

Internet Freedom

While checking round the latest news and stuff I came across the latest campaign from Amnesty International which is trying to remove the censorship that some countries apply to the internet and what their citizens can publish and read. The site for this is irrepressible.info and as part of the campaign you can use your website to publish stuff that has been censored elsewhere in the world. An example of this is already on the right of this site and hopefully the campaign can change at least some things.

On a similar note the tv listings at bleb.org have had to remove ITV due to a law which says you have to be licensed to publish the TV listings for those channels. Obviously there's nothing that can be done at the moment, but it just seems silly when the information is already available on their websites.

Play hard then work hard?

Well the Concert Band ball was last Saturday and first of all I have to say it was one of the best nights out I've had in ages. I checked into the hotel about 2 and then we immediately headed out to a bar to watch the cup final.

Originally thinking that playing West Ham would be a walkover was a mistake as they played a fantastic match which went to extra time (issues for rehearsals) and penalties but Liverpool won (get in!) which to be honest is the main thing.

Getting back and sound checking and then getting ready all kind of went past in a haze and before you knew it, everyone else was showing up and we were getting ready to play. The set went really well, quickly followed by dinner and then the speeches and a new rousing arrangement of happy birthday which Jamez had arranged last minute, as per ;)

Time swiftly moved past and before we knew it the bar was closing and we were looking for a new place to move onto. Eventually collapsing into bed around half 2 was a blessing after a great night with great friends.

Unfortunately the last few days at work have been fairly long as we try to complete everything before the deadline but it should all be worth it, especially as our manager has agreed to get the drinks in when we head to the pub on Friday, result :D

Large Update

Check back it's been nearly a month since I updated so here's a hopefully comprehensive rundown of what's been going on. (In sections too, check me out)

Work
Things continue with a much of a muchness. There's plenty to be done, and hopefully just enough time to do it, but the work is still challenging (very in places) which is the important bit at the moment, I don't want to end up doing the same thing over and over again so it becomes mundane, gotta keep it interesting.

Band
Well we're back rehearsing after the Easter break, and the line up for the summer concerts is looking good. Bohemian Rhapsody is back in there again, with the fantastic tenor solos which I aim to really nail this year, obviously along with all the other pieces we'll be playing.

I did manage to go and get a new saxophone and after nearly an hour playing some very very nice instruments I went with the Yamaha (pictured below) which seemed to suit my style of playing and the type of playing I'm doing at the moment, and will probably carry on doing.

Speaking of playing, with the Summer Ball on Saturday the jazz band have reformed with it's 5th line up to provide some early evening entertainment for the masses. Last year's was really good fun to do, and hopefully this years will be even better. Just need to find the right level of liquid stimulation to induce the best improv possible ;)

O&S
With August fast looming and the need for the group to run independantly things are moving along fairly well. The structures appear to be falling into place for everyone to help out and keep things running and growing. I've got the role of chair of this new group, albeit temporarily until January when we should have more of the things we need in place.

It's looking to be quite a challenge running all these things, but hopefully the experiences I've already picked up from things like Concert Band will stand me in good stead, plus I've got a fantastic group of people to work with so that's got to be a bonus.

Sport
Finally a fairly unobvious section for those who know just how sporty (or not) I am but I think I can justify it.

The Ultimate club has moved the practices outside for the forseeable future (trying to encourage the summer) which means that there's a lot more running around to be done. The first one was last week, and was very enjoyable. Now I just need to sort out the throws again to cope with the wind, and cutting into the now acres of space there appears to be everywhere.

Secondly the concert band are now doing sports on the common of a weekend. The first was during the bank holiday weekend, which was felt for the next couple of days as every muscle complained bitterly about being used for something active. But we did the same mix of football, rounders and chucking the disc about yesterday, and things did seem a lot easier this morning. Plus I think certain aspects of the games we were playing had improved and I was definitely running about a bit more.
---

Well there we go, hopefully a fairly comprehensive roundup of the last few weeks. Likely to be more of the same over the next few weeks, but I really will get round to doing some decorating this summer, most likely the lounge, and sorting out the garden a bit more as it'd be nice to have at least one bbq this summer.

Shopping and DIY

OK, so I've been telling people over the last couple of days my exciting news about getting a new saxophone, and I was all prepared to go up to Dawkes and try out and bring back a shiny new one. There just came the slight snag of getting the money out of my savings and ready to be used, I log on to my 'online' account and initiate the transfer which disappears straight away, but to where, it's not in my current account, and apparently won't be there until after Easter. So why does it take three working days to electronically transfer some money. Who know's but it does mean that the journey if postponed until next weekend :(

But this does give me some time to spruce up the house a bit and possibly sort out the garden over the long weekend. This will reaquaint me with the glorious orange receipts of B&Q but that not necessarily a problem.

On the plus side the prints I bought in Reims are now framed and hung (not too badly for a first attempt) so there's a bit more interest in the hallway. However the coat hooks appear to be pulling a massive amount of plaster out of the wall, so they may be moving slightly earlier than expected but this will at least remove coats from over the thermostat.

Back, and recovered?

Well tour was awesome, the photos are all up on my flickr site so you can check out some of the great shenanigans as I caught them on film.

Highlights of the week have to include

Touring round Moet & Chandon, learning quite a lot about champagne and then getting a couple of free samples.

New food, trying mussels for the first time (will try again), and in a more French style, Snails(!) or Escargot if you want to be posh. Quite a lot like mussels once you've hooked them out of the shell.

Three great concerts, two which in churches with very challenging acoustics, but which we admirably coped with and made a significant difference to some of the pieces.

Most importantly, getting to know all the new people in the band and everyone hanging out during the evenings in the local bars.

Having the weekend to recover was definitely a bonus, but then it was back to work as normal this morning to cope with all the new email that had arrived while I was out, and sorting out the things that had come up.

Never mind, the break was well worth it, and I can't wait for next years excursion.

Off on tour

After a hectic few weeks ensuring that everything would be done at work in time to meet the deadlines it's finally time to go off on tour with the band again.

This years tours to Reims should be fantastic, plus we have the advantage of being guided round Moet & Chandon champagne house as well as all the traditional meals in local restaurants and rearranging the local pubs to suit our seating arrangements better.

There will no doubt be a longer post once we're back and I've suitable recovered. Why this guy thinks that wasting a disgustingly large amount of water, when we are already being warned of drought conditions this summer is a good idea is beyond me.

Protesting when done in the right way can do some good, I took part in the 'Make Poverty History' campaign last year, and marched round Edinburgh which was peaceful, well organized and supported by a great deal of the general public.

This has already caused derision from the same general public and hopefully the legal action that the water companies almost have to pursue will be successful.

The worst part of this in my humble opinion is the way this guy tries to dress it up as art, this is quite clearly a way for this guy to get his name in the press (which is why I'm refraining from mentioning it) and ought to be seen for the sham it is.

While our system of water isn't perfect, there also needs to be a greater understanding (in this and a lot of other things) that having clean water delivered straight to our home, and then (for some) not having to pay for exactly what is used is such a priviledge compared to some areas of the world that still don't have access to clean water.

Perhaps when everyone has a greater understanding of how lucky we are in this country then some of the things we take for granted will be better respected.

Ice Skating

Another week, and another concert band social, this time to the ice skating rink in Basingstoke. Not having gone ice skating for many years I was a bit nervy when I first set out on the ice, but after a bit of time and some almost bullying from Nicke I was just about getting around the rink under my own steam.

The only fall I had was very embarrasing, not actually skating, just getting back on the ice when my feet went out from out from under me. Wasn't that bad, but there's more than likely to be a bruise in the morning.

Now if I could just get rid of this irritating cold all would be good, well just so long as it's gone by tour.

Concert Time

So after 2 and a bit months practice it was time to sit in the Turner Sims and put on the Concert Bands Easter Concert. The line up was varied, and suitably challenging in places but I think we managed to pull them all off.

Opening with Pirates of the Carribean and then closing with Hollywood Milestones meant there were plenty of recognisable tunes. It was also great to play Global Variations again, I have mixed memories of this piece from when I first started in the band and the cafe style solo halfway through. This time I really think I nailed it and obviously there's the fun of being stood up to recognise the solo being played.

Afterwards there was the trip to the Mitre for a well deserved drink and all that remains for this term is a couple of socials, a pre-tour rehearsal and of course tour itself. Can't wait :)

The simple things in life

Given that it's a Friday that should be enough to keep the day happy and full of the promise of good things. But there were also a couple of things that on there own seem silly but really help improve that sense of inner well being.

1) The lunch time pint.
Now I'll admit, not a rare occurance during the working week/day but after 3 hours straight of meetings this morning being able to take some time out and chill out at the clubhouse was very, very welcome.

2) Wearing sun glasses on the way home
Again, this seems a silly thing to feel good about, but after months of leaving work or getting home in the dark, it still being light enough to require shades and still being light while I'm sat here typing this makes the outlook decidely bright for the weekend.

Resurrecting old hardware

Part of the reason I started this blog, was the previous one sat on my home server became unavailable due to some major hardware failure. The fillings were varied and all home made, as were the pancakes, which was a bit scary given that I'd never made batter (or in fact pancakes) before. Everyone seemed to enjoy the food, and the DVD and gaming afterwards was also a bit of a laugh.

Speaking of cooking, I've been reminded by young Miss Samme that I haven't mentioned the invention of the breakfast fajita which was produced and sampled the other week. Nothing too exciting (and I did forget to leave my name) but having spotted an accident in the tailback from another accident outside Oxford my report of it got read out.

The weekend itself was very good, if a little tiring. But we managed to get through the AGM with the decisions that we were hoping for, and even though we were a little short numbered for the concert everyone agreed that it was a great concert that showed just how much hard work we'd put into it.

Going up there tired probably didn't help what with sleeping on a floor but I think I'm fairly well caught up now, just need to avoid all the colds and flus that have been going round work, especially as I've agreed to give a demo on Wednesday as part of a large site wide event to show exactly what it is that each team uses.

Apart from that still trying to play Ultimate and get better at things, a couple of knocks to the chest meant I wasn't playing for as long as possible, but still got the score on the first one so it wasn't that bad.

SUCB Swimathon

The regular and varied social scene of the Concert Band took on a decidely aquatic theme as we took ourselves to Romsey Rapids for some fun and games. Everyone seemed to enjoy the flumes and the rapids, even if they were being dragged round by their ankles.

After everyone had had enough we dried off an headed down to the Crown to meet up with some other banders for food and drink. After a lively discussion of the various merits of toppings on a burger, Bacon and Pineapple still being my preference (and what I had) and on chips, mayonaise is not right I tell you. We finished the drinks and headed back well relaxed.

I guess there must have been some exercise involved as I was quite down on my weight for the piggy club at work, which might be a problem in a fortnight when I get a chance to weigh in again:/

Ultimate Social Occasion

So after getting back into the swing of things with practices it was obviously time another social event for the huc.it lot and so we ventured into Ocean Village for the evening. Hadn't fully left work, just about to drive home when the phone went off, so after a quick discussion with the guy out in the states, I agreed to take a look once I got home.

So that's what I've just done, so there's always that dangerous possibility that it's gonna come back and require more working at home but then I do get paid for it, and given that this is the first (and only time) it's happened in a year of being on the on call rota it's not too bad.

Putting the fun back into driving?

My car has just been through it's annual service which meant I had the opportunity to drive one of the courtesy cars around for the day. These are fairly new Corsas and I have to admit that this years was better than last years in which I felt very oversized and cramped (6ft 2in is far too big for a little car).

So the drive into work from the garage was fairly easy and doable, however on the way back I thought I'd try out the "fun" road between Hursley and Chandlers Ford. Driving as I knew I could in my own car was interesting to say the least, cornering was definitely an experience, more so than you normally get in a Vauxhall.

So in my humble opinion, putting the fun back into driving? for nipping around in the town/city the corsa is perfectly comfortable and can hold it's own. For doing fun things like 60 down a twisty country road, not so good.

Friends and Family

After several weekend meetings it was nice not to have to travel anywhere and spend some time at home. Large amounts of tidying went on Saturday before the band guys came round for snacks, pizza and DVD. The evening was a lot of fun, including a closely contested game of Pictionary. How I got the last clue is not something I really want to dealve into at this point but it was a great shout for the win.

Sunday it was back to the parents for dinner, don't remember the afternoon much due to some good napping, which was understandable due to the late night before. About a year ago I wrote a small script which generates RSS feeds which various people have used about the place. Andy Clayton has taken this a bit further and produced a widget for OSX which shows what's on now and next.

Take a look and see if they're of any use to you, hopefully they are.

First Post!!
